Dating Online Research – Hookmeup & La Trobe University

Categories:  online dating book

The research was conducted online in IM with other singles online between the ages of 18 and 30. Participants chat with the interviewer about their experiences of online dating – which was good, what was bad and nothing in between. Participants will discuss whether they think there is something risky about online dating, how many people they’ve met through online dating, what were the results of these meetings and how does it compare all to meet people other ways.

Well, some provisional results are in and we’d like to share with you.

Professor Pranee Liamputtong said: It’s interesting when we compare these results to some of the first research projects like we did five years ago, you can see a real change in how and why people use online dating. Five years ago online dating was less frequent and many people feel some sort of stigma about using it, but now it’s much more the norm. Many participants noted that this is one of the most common ways they and their friends meet people.

So what are the people who use online dating? Participants so far have shared a variety of reasons. It seems that most people seem to use online dating to find a long-term partner. But this does not mean sex is not. For some people, online dating still offers an opportunity to explore their sexuality, such as allowing people to try different sexual behaviors, or exploring their sexual orientation. As a participant, who uses online dating with her partner as summarized “meet people and maybe have sum fun, make friends.”

Online dating also offers a great way for people to widen their networks, allowing you to meet people you would not otherwise and this can be done when you’re comfortable at home. One participant noted that she liked online dating because it “allows me to meet someone who I share interests with – without the hassle of trying to have a conversation in a noisy bar or pub where all the guys buddies watching his every move.

Of course, everyone has a certain method of selection of their potential dates. The most obvious are by looks and personality, they are initially posted a profile and then through chat, email and phone calls. But how else are our fellow online daters a selection of their potential connections?

More and more people use a set of online methods to monitor their prospects for dating. Some people like to seek consistency between what a person writes on his profile and what they type in the chat. Some people like to use webcam as it allows them to read body language and expressions to evaluate the sincerity and honesty. And now, with the rise of social networking sites, a number of online daters will check their dates any MySpace or Facebook pages to see if everything adds up and is what they have already been told and photos they saw.
